Announcing our new project: Forward Footing

We are pleased to announce that we have a new project, Forward Footing, to bring your more creative walking over the next year!

Thanks to a grant from the National Lottery through Awards for All, Miles & Dacombe will be creating a Landscape Intervention Kit and running a series of walks to promote the use of the kits.

We are making the kits this autumn, and running our walks in the new year. The idea of the kits is to motivate people to get out walking by giving a walk an extra creative slant! The kit will be a bag of ideas, materials and tools to inspire you to create your own temporary art works in the landscape. The ideas will work in urban or rural areas and we hope will make walks fun, creative, a shared experience and a new way to look at and interact with your environment.

We will also set up an online site so that anybody using the kits across the country can post photos of art works they have created in the landscape, to share and inspire others!

We will be taking our walking methodology further afield with this new project. Our walks and kits will tour to eight different counties. So far we have confirmed walks in Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Derbyshire and Nottingham. Dates for walks will be posted on this blog in due course - perhaps you can join us for one?

The Sculpture Network Brunch 2014

Miles and Dacombe were invited to show InTenz, their mobile sculpture kit as part of the Kettering sculpture network exhibition, part of the 5th International Celebration of Contemporary Sculpture. The sculpture network international New Year Brunch, was an opportunity for sculptors to connect at the same time, in different 14 different venues throughout  Europe. The Brunch took place at 181 Stamford Road Kettering artspace Susan Williams Sunday 19^th January 2014 between 10.00 - 2.00. 

The event was a wonderfully warm, lively, joyful event beautifully hosted by artist Susan Williams with homemade soup, scrumptious cakes, wine and hot drinks. 

In Susan's studio there were laptops and computers live-streaming the event, films and slideshows showing work from the artists in Kettering alongside international artists. 

The sculptures were installed in the garden, summerhouse and outbuilding and after weeks of rain and a 

very cold, grey installation day, the sun put in an appearance enabling visitors to walk and explore under vivid blue sky.

Kasia Williams thought that being inside InTenz was like being inside her mind with thoughts converging and creating new or different viewpoints.

The sculpture is made of three identical tent-like structures that can be configured in a multitude of arrangements. The three tent-like express spaces that reference action, communication and rest and were a product of our experience and conversations surrounding the regeneration taking place in Corby at the time

The work is easily transportable and can be hired, with the artists for events, workshops or projects. If you are thinking about staging an exploration of space, landscape, architecture, shelter in an interior or exterior setting please do not hesitate to contact us.

Dear Artists and Supporters of the Arts,

 

Many thanks for attending sculpture network’s New Year’s Brunch 2014 last Sunday.

 

About 2,500 artists, art mediators and friends of the arts gathered simultaneously at 45 different venues, in 14 countries. This has by far exceeded our greatest expectations and we are extremely pleased that there is such an enormous interest and solidarity for sculpture. 

We produced a short video to mark our 10^th anniversary this year, which you can watch here

Can You Help Us During the Grow Your Tenner Funding Drive This October?

During the past 7 years we have developed interesting, engaging, meaningful projects that involve the community in contemporary art practice whilst striving to support Wellbeing. We have conducted walks and interventions in Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Finedon, Rushden and Derbyshire and have made work in woods, on allotments, by streams, in an empty shop, on station platforms and on a community allotment. 

Through a recommendation from Northamptonshire Community Foundation we have an online charitable giving page on the Local Giving website and have heard that the fabulous Grow Your Tenner scheme is about to start a new funding round. Under the banner of Beanfield Artists we are able to benefit from the Grow Your Tenners scheme.

So with this opportunity in mind we hope to rally all our supporters, plus our past, present and future participants by asking them if they can help us during Grow Your Tenner. Each donation of up to but not more than £10 will be matched from the Grow Your Tenner fund.

A donation of £10 can be worth up to £22.50:

+£2.50 Gift Aid

+£10 Match funding

Total = £22.50

The £500,000 will be split into two pots of £250,000. £250,000 will match £10 donations as above while the second £250,000 will be used to match new Direct Debits. The first six monthly payments of up to £10 will be matched.

Light Walks Further Afield: mapping memories

After our walks, we all wrote labels for our map, the things we saw, the things we remembered...

Light Walks Further Afield: a farewell walk

On the morning of our final walk the weather was undecided - rain, sun, wind, a bit of everything seemed to be thrown into the pot. Before leaving the hostel we heard a wide variety of bird song, along our route cows sheltered beneath trees and the Light Walkers donned their fabulous Poundland ponchos!

We had prepared copper tags for our final walk. What has the walking meant to you? What was the best thing?

Now to find a perfect place in the landscape to install and photograph them. We scanned the walls for just the right mossy, stone wall in which to install our copper thoughts.

 A curious cat came to introduce himself.

Not unlike the cat, the three that walked together yet alone strode off

Carole and Jo had had many thoughts and conversations about trees during the stay and the ash tree seemed foremost in their minds because of its current threatened position. On their first day in Alstonefield they saw this piece of tree lore in the local pub.

Walking round the village from a different direction led us to an information board about the Green Well...

...which we also managed to find.

The stone lining was beautifully crafted and reminded us just how important a reliable source of water is to a village.

After the walk and a spot of brunch it was time for the Light Walkers to pack their bags, but you can see from the picture above, that they seemed in no hurry to leave. We hope they left Alstonefield tired, happy and eager to take other walks in other places in the future.
